INTRODUCTION

My name is Amber Lowdermilk and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC #11675) with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. I have a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology from Adler University. I provide phone/video counselling and psychotherapeutic services for children, teens, adults and parents living in British Columbia.

The most essential part of the therapeutic relationship is the rapport between client and counsellor as a solid rapport tends to lead to the most effective therapeutic outcomes. I offer 15-minute consultations if you would like to meet before booking an appointment.

YOU ARE THE EXPERT OF YOU!

I believe that you are the expert of your own story and my role is to provide a comfortable space for you to unpack whatever is getting in the way of your day-to-day functioning. The platform of my approach is based on an Adlerian theory (connection to family/community is seen as essential in our wellbeing) and a person-centred orientation (by providing a supportive therapeutic environment that includes deep empathy and positive regard a person can move towards healing similar to how wearing a cast can help a bone heal).

Together we sort through what you put on the table and I offer therapeutic strategies that may help you address challenges. My goal is for you to have insights, strategies and tools that you can generalize to your life beyond the time we are working together.

WHO ARE MY CLIENTS AND WHAT CHALLENGES DO I HELP THEM WITH?

I work 1-1 with children, teens, adults and parents. When working with children and teens, I endeavour to involve caregivers, when appropriate.

I have advanced training and am certified in providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which is the most effective treatment for anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. CBT looks at how thoughts impact behaviour and how behaviour impacts thoughts and also explores how body sensations and emotions influence us.

I am also certified to provide the following treatments: Interpersonal therapy (IPT), Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), Circle of Security.

I SPECIALIZE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

Anxiety - I work with children, teens, and adults who experience anxiety challenges, including separation anxiety, social anxiety, depression, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. I also work with caregivers of children and teens with various forms of anxiety.

Developmental disabilities - I work with individuals on the autism spectrum and the fetal alcohol spectrum. I also work with caregivers of children and teens with developmental disabilities.

ADHD - I work with adults, teens, and caregivers of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). I also work with adults who are in a relationship with a person who is diagnosed with ADHD/ADD.

Depression, low mood - I work with children, teens, and adults who experience depression or low mood challenges. I also work with caregivers of children and teens who struggle with mood regulation and those who are in relationships with someone who experiences low mood.

Other areas: Stress management, life transitions, grief and loss (including the loss of a pet), caregiver support for child/teen behaviour challenges.
